Step 1 of 7 on the VA career path

Canva Virtual Assistant: Skills, Tasks and Jobs

Canva is the design tool most small businesses already use, so VAs who can turn a rough idea into a clean post, slide deck or PDF in Canva are hired for it again and again.

What the work is

Canva is an online design tool with templates for social posts, presentations, documents, videos and print. Clients like it because they can open and tweak your work themselves.

A Canva VA isn't always a full-time designer. Often it's part of a social media, marketing or admin role: making the week's posts, updating a sales deck, formatting an ebook or turning notes into a one-pager. Strong Canva skills plus a good eye for consistency make you very useful.

Typical tasks

Tools you'll use:

How to learn it

  1. Work through Canva's free Design School lessons.

  2. Copy great designs (for practice only): rebuild three posts you admire, then make your own version.

  3. Learn the basics that make designs look professional: alignment, spacing, two fonts at most, and a consistent color palette.

  4. Make a brand kit for an invented business and design a week of posts in it.

How to show you can do it

Clients hire proof, not promises. Two or three of these in your applications will set you apart:

Mentor tip

Put your best sample first and keep it short. A client deciding between twenty applicants will look at one thing for thirty seconds. Make it count.

Open roles that ask for it

These are open roles at VA MASTERS. VA Career Hub is published by Outsourcing Insider, a VA MASTERS company. List as of October 25, 2026; every role links to its page on vamasters.com, where you apply.

Questions people ask

Can I get a VA job with only Canva skills?

Usually as part of a role: social media assistant, marketing assistant or content VA. Pair Canva with scheduling posts, writing captions or basic video editing and you'll fit many more job posts.

Do I need Canva Pro?

Many clients share their own Pro account with you. To practice, the free plan is enough; mention in applications that you're comfortable with Pro features.
