What the work looks like

Admin VAs keep a business running day to day: email, scheduling, data entry, documents, research and reports. Executive assistants support one busy person closely and often grow into operations roles.

What to check before you apply

  1. Whether roles are general admin or true EA work (EA roles usually need more experience)
  2. The tools listed in their job posts (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, project tools)
  3. Whether they publish hiring steps and typing or skills tests
  4. Support once you're placed: who you can talk to if the client relationship is hard

And never pay to apply: real agencies are paid by their clients. See how to spot a fake offer.

Questions people ask

Is admin a good first VA job?

Yes. Admin work builds on skills many people already have from office jobs, and it teaches you how small businesses run. It's a common starting point before specializing.

What's the difference between an admin VA and an executive assistant?

An admin VA usually handles tasks for a team or business. An executive assistant supports one person closely: their inbox, calendar, travel and priorities. EA roles ask for more judgment and experience.

What skills do admin VA agencies test?

Usually written English (sample emails), accuracy (data entry or a spreadsheet task) and organization (scheduling across time zones).

Scores blend our six-criteria rubric (70%) with fit for this field (30%). We don't score pay. Facts are as published by each agency and on Indeed and Glassdoor, checked in October 2026. Spotted an error? Tell us.
